Payload CMS review
Payload as a code-first headless CMS—our team's production use on KnowledgePunk and cited vendor docs.
Editorial disclosure: StyYLL LLC runs Payload CMS in production for KnowledgePunk network storefronts (apps/cms in our monorepo). Observations below mix that operational experience with vendor documentation—verify version-specific behavior against the Payload docs for your release.
Architecture
Payload is a TypeScript-first CMS embedded in your Node app: collections, globals, fields, and access control live in code. Admin UI is generated from config. This suits teams that want CMS schema in version control beside application code.
APIs and front ends
Local API, REST, and GraphQL patterns are documented on payloadcms.com. We pair Payload with Next.js-style storefronts in production; Astro and other fetchers work when you expose HTTP APIs.
Hosting
You self-host the Node process and database (PostgreSQL is common in our stack). Capacity planning, migrations, and backups are your responsibility unless you use a vendor-hosted offering described on Payload’s site.
Upgrades
Payload releases frequently. Budget time for regression tests on custom fields, hooks, and plugins after upgrades—something we do on our own deployments.
When Payload fits
Product engineering teams that want CMS config in Git, strong typing, and ownership of infra—accepting operational work SaaS CMS vendors absorb.
